It was reported that John Wilkes Booth, the killer of Abraham Lincoln, was shot dead in a barn near Port Royal.
But perhaps this story should be questioned, perhaps it is not true at all…
In 1872, seven years after Booth was supposedly killed, Finis L. Bates met a man who called himself John St. Helen.
After befriending and gaining the confidence of this man Bates came into knowledge which would completely contradict all previous facts about one of most famous assassinations in history.
For John St. Helen was not a simple shopkeeper living in Texas, instead he was the actor turned assassin John Wilkes Booth.
Bates traveled the breadth of the country gaining evidence to support his argument that Booth did not die in a barn, but instead many years later.
He built a picture of Booth’s life, questioning those who knew him before and after the event to demonstrate that St. Helen and Booth were the same man.
Published forty-two years after the murder of Lincoln and four years after St. John’s death, The Escape and Suicide of John Wilkes Booth is a fascinating account of what was possibly the greatest deception in history,
Finis L. Bates was a Memphis, Tennessee, lawyer and author of The Escape and Suicide of John Wilkes Booth. This book was published in 1907 and Bates died in 1923.
The Escape and Suicide of John Wilkes Booth eBook Finis L Bates
Finis L. Bates's THE ESCAPE AND SUICIDE OF JOHN WILKES BOOTH is one of the most roundly hatedbooks by so-called Lincoln assassination experts. To be frank, that's why I read it. What the experts don't tell
you was that Bates was a lawyer who spent decades getting affidavits regarding most of the claims that he
makes in his book. These affidavits are not only quoted but in most cases either printed or photocopied into
the text. Lastly, the John Wilkes Booth that Bates portrays is highly believable. Instead of an emotional basket case
and a second-rate actor, we are introduced to a brilliant man who was dedicated to the Southern cause and who could
recite entire Shakespeare plays. Whether one wants to believe Bates story or not is subject to debate. What is not
subject to debate is that this book makes for a fascinating read.

The Escape and Suicide of John Wilkes Booth eBook Finis L Bates Reviews
Not very good reading.
Great book, tho kind of repeating itself toward the end. Quite believable. I find myself wanting to call some Enid, Oklahoma newspapers to see if they have any articles that they might be able to send me on this.
While I have seen TV interviews of 'historians' who pooh-pooh the information in this book, the many items of evidence offered by the author for having encountered the living John Wilkes Booth years after the Lincoln assassination is convincing.
I have heard these stories before and I'm a sort of armchair expert on the Lincoln Assassination and conspiracy. I found some inconsistencies in the story, but also some plausibility.
For me, I don't think so but I've been wrong before. An interesting read.
Ive heard this story for years, even remember seeing it on Unsolved Mysteries, Its a much better read then I thought it was going to be.
I live in the DFW area and Grandbury is not far from me, its neat to know there is a Texas Connection.
I personally believe He DID GET AWAY
READ THIS BOOK and look up NATE ORLAWEK and the LATE Dr. Arthur Ben Chitty, they are EXPERTS in this subject.
2 BIG THUMBS UP
I stumbled upon this book after reading that the fine actress, Kathy Bates, had a grandfather who was an author. So I searched & this little gem plopped out of my search! WOW!!! Imagine my surprise!
Don't want to spoil the story, but I'm a decades long student of the WBTS, & when this man, John St. Helens told his story of escape through "Mosby's Confederacy" with the help of the Rangers, you have to take it seriously. No one could make this up without real knowledge of the ground. He tells who was killed in the barn, how he came to be with Booth & Herold, & Bates' research into the deep facts of how the body was handled will give you pause. If this man was not Booth, how could he know what was in the pockets of the man supposed to be Booth? You can't make that up...
I've read all the Booth books, but oddly , this story seems to make the most sense. I'd love to know what others think. I'd love to know why this story has been rejected by historians. The key is in the details, but there is so much more about this man...his recitations of Shakespeare, his dead-ringer resemblance to Booth, the family's recognition of an 1877 picture...You have to read it for yourself. Believe or not, it's a great read!
This book is very well written by presenting the who, what, where, why and how the killing of Lincoln was accomplished, who were involved, who assisted in the escape,. where Booth hid out and proof of his is death of suicide. I used to live in Fort Worth Texas where I first heard about a man who lived in the area of Granbury Texas(near Fort Worth). I considered it a fairytale until I read this book. The author presented his research to Washington authorities who failed to reopen the Booth case. This was because [I determined] that public had already accepted the the Booth death by pursuing federal troops in a shootout, and they didn't want to expose the possibility of revealing the apparent aid Booth received from Union forces in his escape.
